Eventers for Sale and Loan

Eventing (also known as three day eventing or horse trials) is an equestrian event where a single horse and rider combination compete against other combinations across the three disciplines of dressage, cross-country, and showjumping. Eventing’s history can be traced back to a cavalry test which required mastery of several types of riding. Now-a-days the competition may be run as a one-day event (ODE) at lower levels of the sports, where all three events are completed in one day (dressage, cross-country and then showjumping) or a three-day event (3DE).

Eventing is often known as the Triathlon of the Equestrian world.

Within Eventing you can compete at unaffiliated or affiliated level. At affiliated events your results are published and available to be viewed online and a horse can acquire Foundation Points at the lower level and Points above Novice level. These points can provide you with an indication of how well the horse is doing and can aid when selling or buying with ‘how much the horse is worth’ and a general guide of how consistent the horse is.

Eventing at unaffiliated level can start anywhere from 60cm upto 1 meter + depending on the venue. At affiliated the first level is called BE80 which is aimed at young horses or as an introduction to new horse/rider combinations. The dressage test is equivalent to a Prelim and the maximum height of the fences (both cross country and showjumping is 80cm). The classes go up in 10 cm ranges, i.e. BE90, BE100 etc until BE105 where it then changes to Novice.

If you are searching for a horse to event you must first know what level you are currently riding/competing at and then decide how far you want to go. You can either find an eventer for sale that is experienced and use their record as an indication of what they are capable of, or you can buy a younger horse to train up through the levels. Following this, you must then decide on a breed. Eventing is a demanding, athletic sport which requires horses to be trainable for the dressage element with a good brain, careful for the showjumping phase and bold and brave for the cross country. Thoroughbreds, are popular at the higher level due to their speed and stamina, Irish Sport Horses are more popular at the lower levels as they tend to have the right combination of athleticism and a sensible brain. Other breeds that can also be found enjoying eventing are  Connemara’s, some Cob’s and any horse that enjoys jumping.
