Why finding a loan home for a cheeky cob mare was so easy…

Nicki Hawkins has owned her fun cob mare, Dolly,  for almost 5 years but sadly she was diagnosed with mild navicular 3 yrs ago. Although this didn’t stop Dolly’s zest for life, Nicki decided that in order to manage the navicular appropriately Dolly needed a new home where she could enjoy being a happy hack. However, Dolly was not the traditional ‘happy hacker’, despite being 16 years old she was fun, forward going and could be quirky. Finding just the right loan home was Nicki’s paramount concern but she was fearful of where to advertise to ensure she only dealt with serious, genuine people that were honest about their own riding ability and experience.  She did not want to open the floodgates, which can happen when offering a horse for loan, and needed a system that would help seek out the perfect new home ideally without having to deal with an onslaught of  people looking for a cheap horse.

“Dolly is a lovely kind mare but can be cheeky and lights up when ridden. She is limited in what she can do now and although she would like to spend the day racing across fields and jumping, physically she is no longer up to it.” Nicki Hawkins

Nicki discovered Right Horse Right Home and was so impressed with the unique system. Anyone seriously interested in Dolly filled in an application form which detailed their riding experience, the home they can offer and what type of horse they are looking for. The team at Right Horse Right Home filtered all the enquiries which ranged from ‘how big can she jump’ (jumping was not an option for Dolly which was clearly stated on her advert) to ‘does she come with all of her tack because I don’t know how to fit a saddle’ and Nicki just had the job of reading the applications and contacting those people who she felt were real contenders.  Any applicants she felt would not be ideal she simply clicked on a button which then automatically sent a polite email informing them that on this occasion their application had been unsuccessful.

Nicki said she knew as soon as she read Rachel’s application that she would suitable for Dolly and that the type of riding she wanted to do matched well with the level of work Dolly could manage.

“I had to be very careful when finding a loaner for her and couldn’t believe how lucky I was when Rachel contacted me via Right Horse Right Home. She is everything I wanted for Dolly, an experienced rider who was looking for a happy hack and would enjoy her cheeky ways.” Nicki Hawkins

Dolly has now moved to Rachel’s yard and is settling in well and we wish them all the very best in their future together.

“I would definitely recommend Right Horse Right Home as they have been very supportive throughout the process.” Nicki Hawkins
