Schoolmaster Ponies for Sale and Loan

A schoolmaster pony is one that has been well trained and has the ability and experience to help a rider learn, perfect their riding skills and help them gain in confidence. This is particularly useful for young riders and children.

There are certain attributes that all good schoolmasters should have but they can also be specialists in one field rather than allrounders. They might be a dressage schoolmaster who can teach you how to do ride a winning test but would not be good at showjumping, for example. It is important to understand exactly what you want from a pony.  An all round schoolmaster is likely to be an older pony that may have been through pony club with several children before being outgrown and sold on, however and older pony may have other issues, such as health and management requirements.

• Willingness: even if the pony isn’t the best mover, if he accepts the rider’s aids and keeps thinking forward, then the rider will be able to learn.
• Well trained: a schoolmaster will have been trained correctly and consistently to ensure that any rider, if asking correctly will receive the desired outcome. Don’t expect a schoolmaster to just jump any fence, they do still require a rider to ‘press the right buttons’.
• No vices: They should be well mannered on the ground, in the stable and under saddle. A sensible brain that is not too sharp or spooky.

Things to consider when buying a schoolmaster:

• Does the pony need any special care or medications? This may not be a deal breaker but it is something to consider for the long term wellbeing of the pony and the financial implications.
• Does the pony need extra time to warm up? A schoolmaster is likely to be over 12 years old, as experience demands age and, therefore, he may be stiffer and need longer to warm up and may also need additional joint supplements.  If he’s fit and well, he will still have many more years ahead of him.
• Why is the pony a schoolmaster rather than a competition pony? The pony may perform very well at competition but it is likely that they would have ‘been there and done that’ and now require a life where the strain of regular competitions isn’t the key focus.
