For Loan Melbourne Sunrise (Mel)
Mel is a handsome chestnut gelding without a bad bone in his body. I have owned him for four years, during which we have done dressage, jumping and some sponsored rides.
Mel is a sensible and honest boy who needs someone who can help him feel confident. Whilst his spooking has dramatically reduced since I bought him, he will occasionally spook and needs someone to encourage him forward. Spooks are few and far between and are genuine; 99% of the time he takes a small step sideways or scoots forward away from what has worried him. However, none of his spooks are intended to remove you from the saddle, and he is well-built so that you remain secure in the saddle.
In the last couple of years, we have taken part in a few unaffiliated dressage competitions, where Mel is securely scoring above 60% in Prelim tests – due to lockdown and work, I haven’t had the opportunities to do more! However, Mel really enjoys hacking and jumping! When hacking, Mel prefers to go in company; when hacking alone, he becomes more cautious and less forward, although he does not nap and is still incredibly well-behaved. Although he is not fond of motorbikes, he is generally sensible with traffic, cyclists and dog walkers. When jumping, he is forward and will enthusiastically take you to the jump. He is very honest, jumping from a standstill if necessary. I have never known him to refuse or run out. We have been on several sponsored rides, where he was impeccably behaved, and done cross-country style jumps as well as show jumps in training sessions, though sadly not yet competed.
Mel is incredibly polite and well-behaved on the ground. He is easy to clip, shoe, load, groom and tack up. He is happy to live in or out, as long as he has company nearby. In the past, he has lived in a herd of approximately 20 other geldings; he now lives in a small herd of 3 geldings, but has been kept in his own paddock without trouble. I would like him to remain local, so would consider homes in Oxfordshire or close parts of Buckinghamshire or Berkshire.
